My name is Joseph A. Waquie. I was born on May 6, 1956 in the Pueblo of Jemez. After my high school graduation in 1974, I was involved in an automobile accident and injured my right knee. I worked for a number of years as a janitor until the stress on my knee was too difficult and the job no longer worked with my disability. When I was young, I used to watch my mother make her pottery. She would allow me to sand and paint the pottery sometimes and that is how I learned how to create a piece of pottery the traditional Jemez way. Since my mother passed away a few years ago, I now make pottery to keep the family's tradition.
